USRA 4-8-2 Heavy
These locomotives were designed from the USRA 4-8-2 Light Mountain starting originally by ALCO in 1919. Even back then many parts were interchangeable with other NSRA type engines. Cylinders were 27" by 30" with drivers 69" in diameter. Boiler pressure was rated at 200 pi with a weight of 327,000 pounds and a tractive force of 53,900 pounds. Only 52 engines, total, were built to USRA heavy mountain design and delivered to three railroads, the C&0, N&W, and FEC. The boilers were the same size as the USRA light 4-8-2's, but mounted higher, due to the + 5" height increase in the Mountain type. Indicative of the USRA heavy type was the front mounting compressors and long tenders. In the 1930's Worthington SA feedwater heaters were added in the C&0 shops to the USRA 4-8-2 Heavy locomotives.
